I became infatuated with birds during my eight years living in Austin, Texas. In hindsight, I think the lack of public land in that state caused me to find nature where I could, which happened to be in my backyard. The bird, butterfly, and plantlife in hill-country is astounding, especially since it’s a migration path. I particularly fell in love with nighthawks, part of the nightjar family and related to whippoorwills, who utilized the billboard above my back porch near a busy intersection to find bugs at night. They nest on the bare ground, as they don’t have feet useful for perching or walking.
