What do we carry? How do we keep open hands if they’re full?

We bring things along with us to ensure our own comfort and safety, to ensure our survival and that of our kin along journeys. It reduces our vulnerability, but does it also reduce a certain freedom and spontaneous connection? Is there good reason to push against this human propensity to carry?

Perhaps I paint empty cups, bowls, baskets, and other vessels as a reflection of my desire to be capacious. To live closer to the immediacy of life, and to be cued by my environment, rather than so controlling of it.

Original 8x10 gouache on cotton rag paper
